Mary Lillian Cordaway Obituary

In Loving Memory of Lillian Cordaway

Lillian Cordaway lived a life defined by strength, hard work, deep faith, and a love expressed most beautifully through food. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Lillian was born on June 30, 1931, in Mercedes, Texas, to David and Rebecca Gutierrez. She was one of five children and grew up surrounded by family, love, and strong values. She spent her childhood in Corpus Christi, Texas, where those early roots shaped the woman she would become.

At the age of 18, Lillian married John Cordaway and soon began her journey as a devoted mother. In 1958, with two young children (John David and Elizabeth,) she bravely moved to Southern California, where she later welcomed her third child (Cynthia.) This move marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with determination and opportunity.

Lillian was career-minded and proud of her work, spending many years in administrative roles. Yet her heart always held a dream of owning her own restaurant. Inspired by her beloved father and his restaurant, she found joy and purpose in the kitchen. In 1985, at the age of 54, Lillian fulfilled her dream by opening her own Tex-Mex restaurant. A proud Texan, she shared cherished recipes from “back home,” bringing comfort and joy to countless customers.

Her Catholic faith was central to her life. Lillian faithfully prayed the Rosary for those in need and traveled across the United States to attend masses and visit churches she felt called to. She has nine grand children and eight great grand children.

Known for her infectious sense of humor and warm spirit, Lillian made friends wherever she went. Many customers became lifelong friends, loving her as a second mom. Her presence, faith, and generosity will be deeply missed but forever.
