Larry Nunez Obituary

Sunday, November 20th, 2022, our dear family protector, Larry C. Nunez, passed away peacefully at home and was called to heaven to join its Honor Guard.

Larry was born on February 26, 1945 in Fullerton, California to his parents Edward and Margaret Nunez. Larry and his siblings – Eddie, Lillian, Leo and Darlene – were raised by various family members with Larry being brought up by his uncle and aunt, Jim and Patsy Vasquez, and their three children Gerry, Bill and Ronnie. They taught him the values of hard work, honesty and family first.

Larry graduated from Fullerton Union High School in 1963. He went on to Fullerton Junior College, where he played basketball and was a National Cross Country Champion.

Uncle Sam called in 1965, and Larry was drafted and sent to Vietnam. He served honorably, moving up the Sergeant ranks and becoming a squad and platoon leader. He safely returned home in July 1967 after earning two Bronze Stars and assorted other battle awards.

Within weeks of returning home, he returned to work at Disneyland, paddling canoes around the Rivers of America. There by chance, his good friend Dale Blanchard, introduced him to Disney Tour Guide Sheryl Ferguson. They married five and ½ months later, and nine months after that welcomed son Jason Bradley on Halloween. Sister Jennifer Christy joined them in 1972, and finally, son Jaron Scott completed the family in 1973.

Starting in 1970, Larry rose through the ranks of management at Disney and finished his career with them at the Queen Mary in 1990. Over the next ten years, he became an International Theme Park Consultant, with projects including Vice President of Disney Animation in Argentina, Vice President of Operations at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA and Vice President at Elitch Gardens in Denver, CO. Before retiring, he returned to Argentina, where he oversaw construction on theme park Parque de la Costa and served as President of the park.

In his final years, Larry most enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren – Katie (22), Madeleine (20), Holly (20), George (18) and Brooke (16). They were his crowning glory! He enjoyed spending time with them going to sporting events, watching tv, brunching at El Torito and taking them on family vacations. He enjoyed many trips with his Veteran friends at the 5th/7th Cavalry Reunions around the country, yearly trips to DC for Veterans Day, and many Disney Reunion events.

He is survived by wife Sheryl, married children Jason (Marnie), Jennifer (George) and Jaron (Monica), and grandchildren Katie, Maddie, Holly, George, Brooke and Seth, his sister Darlene and brother Bill.

Larry lived a full life over his 77 years and will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. He was truly a great soldier and patriot, leader, husband, father, grandfather and friend! Gary Owen and God’s blessings!
