Henry James Zahner Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, friend, sailor, and captain Henry James Zahner, 64, who died in Dana Point, California. Henry was born in Los Angeles, California, and lived a life filled with adventure, kindness, and love for his friends and family.
Henry attended Culver Military Academy, class of 1977, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for leadership, camaraderie, and integrity. He later went on to study at the University of San Diego, class of 1981, where he formed many cherished friendships and further explored his love of the outdoors and the ocean.
An avid sailor, Henry spent countless hours on his beloved sailboat, Sirena, making memorable voyages along the Southern California Coast and to Catalina Island. Whether fishing, camping, or hiking up Mount Whitney, Henry was happiest when surrounded by nature. He was a true outdoorsman and an enthusiastic explorer of all that life had to offer.
Henry worked in commercial real estate, where his hard work, unwavering integrity, and generous spirit earned him a strong professional reputation. Known for his highly ethical approach, Henry built trust and respect among colleagues and clients alike, leaving a lasting impact on those he worked with. Beyond his career, his passion for connecting with people and exploring life’s adventures defined him.
Henry was also known for his kindness and generosity. He was a friend to all, and built community wherever he went, always selflessly ready to offer a helping hand or a listening ear. His family was his greatest joy and source of pride, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him. In his later years, Henry embraced a deeper spirituality and faith, which brought him peace and shaped the way he approached life’s challenges and blessings.
He is survived by his son, Christopher Zahner, married to Ricara Zahner, and their three sons, Landon, Weston, and Jaxon; his daughter, Bree Pendergast, married to William Pendergast, with their two daughters, Matilda and Noa; and his daughter, Haley Zahner, married to Michael Melzer, with their children Marley, Emmett, and Owen. Henry cherished his family.
In accordance with Henry’s final wishes, his ashes will be spread in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Dana Point Harbor in a small, private remembrance ceremony. A celebration of Henry's life will be held at The Point restaurant in Dana Point on February 22, 2025 from 12-3 PM, where friends and family are welcome to gather and honor his memory. Those interested in attending should please RSVP here: https://evite.me/Y6prxkrHcd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association.
Henry’s warmth, generosity, and adventurous spirit will be dearly missed, but will live on through his family and the many lives he touched.
