Surrounded by his loving wife and family, Henry “Hank” Gonzales Cantu, 84, was peacefully called home by the good Lord on November 24, 2020.
This gentle, loving, caring, giving and wonderful man has left a permanent mark etched on our hearts and will be greatly missed by his wife and best friend of 53 years, Alice, their 10 kids, 31 grandkids, 35 great-grandkids and one great-great-grandson.
Alice was Hank’s greatest treasure—the love of his life. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for her honey. Alice lovingly cared for him, supported him and stood by his side until his last breath. The two were inseparable.
A Korean War veteran, Hank served with great honor in the Army. His respect and love for all of our men and women in uniform was admirable. He always made sure to thank them for their service, whether he knew them personally or not.
Hank truly had this amazing ability to make every person he met feel special and loved. He knew no stranger.
Hank held a lot of titles, but there were two that he was most proud of—grandpa and coach.
Family was everything to him. Hank was the patriarch to our large family. Whether it was a baseball game, football game, basketball game, play, dance recital, or birthday, grandpa and grandma were always there to cheer on and celebrate their grandkids, no matter the distance.
Those who knew Hank as coach, will tell you he was so much more than that to them. He was a leader, mentor, a father figure, and the infamous barbecuer. His “hank-burgers” were always in demand. No one on his team ever went without—he always made sure of that.
Hank will be forever remembered for his infectious smile, caring heart, loving embrace, unconditional love, and, of course, for his love of cake—“where’s the cake?” Although our hearts are heavy, we will celebrate his life and find comfort that he is in heaven watching over us.
