George Murdock Sr. Obituary

George “Kayo”  Franklin Murdock Sr. died early November 2, 2021  due to complications from living. He was 80 years old. There will be a viewing/rosary at the Shannon Family Mortuary from 5 - 7 PM on November 17th. There will be a funeral mass in Anaheim at St. Anthony Claret, 11 AM on November 18th with the burial at Holy Sepulcher in Orange at 12:30. A reception will follow at the Murdock home.

George was born in an army hospital in Corvallis, Oregon on the 11th of July, 1941. There were not enough beds so he was placed in an open drawer of a bureau like the character “Kayo” in Moon Mullins, a popular comic strip of the time (hence his nickname). George lived with many different family members while his father served in Italy and his mother made due with the best she could during WWII.  He formed a lot of lasting bonds with his cousins in Minnesota.  George was an avid basketball player who excelled in math, which he studied at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. In September 1964 he married Carol Marie Herres. Being an only child, George thought it a swell idea to have several children - of whom he is survived by his wife, two daughters, four sons, three grandsons, a granddaughter, and two small dogs named Fluffy and Duffy. George was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and an umpire for Anaheim Little League (where he made many friends to be sure). He also coached the basketball team at St. Anthony Claret elementary school.  He worked as a manager at Thrifty and K-Mart stores before becoming a purchaser at Rockwell and Boeing where he eventually retired. He enjoyed fishing, tennis, bowling, Angels baseball, whoop dee doos, and the many dogs who looked after him throughout his long life.  He was often quoted as saying to his kids “I would rather owe it to you than cheat you out of it.” His favorite joke around this time of year was “How do you keep a turkey in suspense?”  I’ll tell you tomorrow.
