Fred - Khorey Obituary

Fred Khorey, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away surrounded by family. He was born on June 4, 1930, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the youngest of four children to Syrian immigrants James Anthony and Amelia Khorey.

Fred overcame a humble childhood marked by hardship and loss, working from a young age to help support his family. A gifted athlete, he taught himself tennis and earned a scholarship to Duquesne University, where he met the love of his life, Shirley Gessner. They married in 1955 and began their family shortly after.

In the early 1960s, Fred and the entire Khorey family moved to California, where he and Shirley settled in Costa Mesa and raised their four children: James, Kristine, Janet, and Keith. Fred worked for the Orange County Register as an advertising salesman and became known for his quick wit, warm humor, and ability to make friends wherever he went.

Fred also found deep meaning in his Orthodox faith. At a small church in Santa Ana, he and Shirley formed lifelong friendships and later helped realize the dream of building St. Luke’s Orthodox Church, a community that remained central to his life.

Fred lived by the values he cherished—family, hard work, education, and faith—and he devoted every part of himself to giving his children a better life. He will be remembered for his laughter, his generosity, and his unwavering love for his family.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Shirley; their children James, Kristine, Janet, and Keith; and all who were blessed to know him.
