Obituary for Doris Eleanor State
Doris Eleanor State, née Dixon, passed away on March 25, 2021 at the age of 93. She was the daughter of William and Phoebe Dixon, born and raised in Los Angeles, California along with her siblings Bruce, Phoebe, and Stephen. Following high school graduation, she went on to obtain her Associate Degree in Commercial Art at Woodbury College. One evening, Doris attended a Lawrence Welk dance at Lick Pier in Santa Monica with her good friend Betty, and there they met their future husbands, Carl Anderson for Betty and Ted State for Doris - all were to become lifelong friends. In 1953, Doris married Ted, and they established their first home in Torrance, California where they had two sons, Steve in 1954, and Ted in 1960. In 1962, Doris and Ted moved to Orange, California where they have lived ever since. Doris was an excellent homemaker, and an especially good cook and gardener. Oh, how she loved her garden! In later years, the garden was her primary occupation; when not tending to it, she would rest in it with a cup of coffee in hand, and in deep contemplation. Beside homemaking, she was accomplished in all manner of arts and crafts, from painting and sketching, to quilting and needlework. One of her favorite artistic subjects was the natural landscape around Wonder Valley, east of Twentynine Palms, California, where the family would often vacation at the desert cabin they homesteaded in the 1950s. The works she has left behind will remain treasured by her family. She was preceded in death by her son Steve, sister Phoebe and brother Stephen, and is survived by her husband Ted, son Ted and daughter-in-law Carolina, grandson John, granddaughter Carol, and brother Bruce.
