Albert Walter Aschoff, Jr. Obituary
Albert was peacefully taken to heaven on November 6, 2024 at age 82. He was the beloved brother of; Brian Micheal and Gerald Robert Aschoff, father to Albert Mires and grandfather to Jake and Jason. Albert was born to Albert Walter and Geraldine Patricia Aschoff on March 25, 1942 in Jersey City, NJ. Al was a WW II war baby and was the eldest of the Aschoff family boys,
As young man, Al was involved in the Cub and Boy scouts. He also served as an acolyte at his local Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He attended Union Hill High School as a teenager and played quarterback for the football team. Al was good looking with dark wavy hair and discovered girls while in high school and often enjoyed going to dances with them. He fancied himself as a James Dean type with pompadour hairstyle, white t shirt and rolled up sleeves. Early on Al developed an interest in chemistry and electronics and repaired radios and TVs while in high school. In his junior year, he left school to become a truck driver and bought his first car – a blue and white mercury complete with the hanging dice and a fast engine. Al was generous with his work earnings and often gave his mom money to help with the house bills.
Al moved from one truck driving job to another and eventually landed at the Yale Trucking company where he was promoted to be their dispatcher. Later he switched to the Bell Telephone company and was an efficient phone installer. During this time, he married and he and his wife “Chickie” welcomed a son Albert Jr. Unfortunately, the marriage did not work out and his wife, Ruth Ann (Chickie), and her family moved with little Al to Reno NV. Later in time, Al met his second wife Ella Mae Lewis and they were very happy together. Al was back at truck driving and made many long-haul trips from New Jersey to Canada. He suffered a work-related accident when his foot was crushed by a high Lo. He eventually went on state disability and soon after he and Ellie relocated to the Jersey Shore and enjoyed their new life by the ocean. Al worked odd jobs on the Jersey Boardwalk during the summers and also helped his neighbor calibrating electronics equipment while living at the shore. Ellie worked in New York City and was the CFO of a large import Pier. Unfortunately, after a long illness, she succumbed to cancer in 2010. Broken hearted, Al felt the calling to come to California to join his brothers.
Al or Big Al as he was known enjoyed the weather in California and especially being with his brothers and their families. He attended many family events, birthdays and holiday celebrations. He was especially fond of Italian food, playing cards, and a glass of wine. He never gave up his interest in football and enjoyed watching the professional NFL games. He continued his generosity by giving to cancer charities such as; St Jude and giving gifts to his nephews and nieces. He often filled the room with stories of his youth and various escapades. And he never lost his eye for women and was very much at ease with them.
Al last wishes were to be cremated and then have his ashes spread over the ocean which he thoroughly loved. He will be sorely missed and remembered for his calm approach to life and his love for everyone. May he rest forever in God’s peace.
