Jerry Schulte Obituary

Jerry Edward Schulte passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 27, 2019 after a long battle with a rare lung disease. Jerry was born in 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri to Henry and Novella Schulte. He was the oldest of their three children. The family lived in St. Louis and Phoenix, Arizona before settling in Long Beach, California. He attended college at Long Beach City College, UCLA, and completed a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Long Beach State University. He joined the Sigma Nu Fraternity at UCLA. While at Long Beach State, he met the love of his life, Lynda. During the Vietnam War, he joined the United States Coast Guard  and was stationed in Cape May, New Jersey. He married Lynda in 1966 and they settled on Staten Island, New York for the duration of his service. On discharge, with a baby girl in tow, his new family returned to southern California and settled in Lakewood and then in Simi Valley. Over the next few years, 2 sons and 2 more daughters completed the family. In the summer of 1979, they relocated to Placentia for the next 39 years. Jerry was active in local politics and school activities with his children. In 2016, he moved to Leisure World in Seal Beach. He volunteered for Concern America, where Lynda worked until her death in 2015. In 2016, he joined St Michael’s Orthodox Church in Whittier, where he was an active member of the church community and deeply enjoyed the tight knit family of God there. His great loves included his 11 grandchildren, native American art and dance, his regular Friday night poker game, and his masterpiece in construction: the stone and baptismal font at St. Andrew Orthodox Church in Riverside. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Novella, and his wife of 50 years, Lynda. His loss is felt by many including dear family and friends from St. Louis, Phoenix, Millikan High School, LBCC, UCLA, Cal State Long Beach, and the Church as well as colleagues who became dear friends from Sunkist Growers, Lipton, Lowry’s, George S. May, IPA, Batavia Construction, and Metro Engineering. His survived by his sister Yvonne Simpson and brother Thomas Schulte (Mary); children Julie Bartley (Scott), Timothy Schulte (Hannah) Andrew Schulte (Sharon), Bridget Holden (Robert) and Sara Velarde (John); and grandchildren Tristan, Crystal, Katherine, Madeline, Thomas, Jacqueline, Bruce, Sienna, Audrey,  Isadora and Henry. Please join his family for a viewing, requiem mass and reception at St Michael's Orthodox Church, Whittier on Saturday March 9, 2019 starting at 10am. An internment ritual for family and close friends will be in St. John’s Chapel at St. Andrew Orthodox Church in Riverside with military burial at Riverside National Cemetery on Wednesday, March 20, 2019. In lieu of flowers, Jerry asked that donations be made to Concern America on behalf of Jerry and Lynda Schulte.
