Four Qualities I Admire About My Mother
There are four qualities or talents I admire about my mom. Three I believe she taught me through her actions but the first one I’d like to talk about is a talent of hers that will always amaze me.
We all know she loved to talk but she had the extraordinary talent of having strangers tell her their life stories within minutes of meeting her. She’d always tell me about the lady she met in the supermarket line or the busboy and the local restaurant and I’d get the details of their births, marriages, divorces, illnesses, their kids, their kids’ marital statuses, how much money they were sending back to Guatemala – you get the picture. I would shake my head in amazement and say – “You got that in 10 minutes in the supermarket line???” Pretty extraordinary.
The second one is that she was a fabulous hostess and knew how to throw a good party. She loved to have people over and have special punches and tasty dips. She’d always make sure she had a pretty table cloth and just the right dishes and silverware. I do this out of habit as well. I’ll break out linen tablecloths and the “good” dishes, even if it’s one my kid’s friends first time at our house for dinner. It’s like something really ingrained in me.
The third one is that mom was very thoughtful person. She always tried to remember everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries by sending an appropriate or funny card. If someone passed away, she’d call the church and order a mass card or light a candle. She had many friends for over forty years. I still have grade school and high school friends. She taught me to make the effort and people will stick by you.
The last one is what almost every mother gives to her children - - unconditional love. She thought we were perfect, even though we weren’t. When my daughter Kristin was about seven or eight years old, we were getting in the car and I was buckling my son Sean into his car seat, she asked me “Why are you such a good mommy?” and I told her “ Kristin, it’s because I had a good mommy.”
We will miss her very much.

My dearest Mom, Thank you for being such a wonderful mother. You were always very stylish and prided yourself on your appearance. You always made sure we were well dressed and well fed. You had a great sense of humor, loved going to plays and movies, dancing and traveling. We had such fun family vacations to Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Utah National Parks, Grand Canyon, Canada etc. I am sorry I can not be there for your service. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers. I feel sad that the last years of your life were not happy ones, filled with sadness and illness, but I know that you are now with the angels in heaven, along with Grandma and Uncle Rudy. Thank you for being the best Mom! Love always, Your daughter Lori
